Under current law, sex offenders are prohibited from living near schools and childcare centers but can legally reside near their victims. House Bill 102 addresses this issue by prohibiting registered sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of their victims’ homes and loitering within 1,000 feet of their victims’ residence.

Well, they’re getting better at acknowledging people they know are going to be the possible perps for instances they thought were stranger danger in the beginning. Still don’t agree with their restriction though.
I like to think I stopped a similar bill here in Georgia, though I have no way of knowing for certain. In any case, I wrote the following to this bill’s sponsors:
“Congressman, did it escape you that this bill forces sex offense registrants to keep tabs on the whereabouts of their victims in order to comply? Or that Ohio law enforcement must also keep track of the victims of sex crimes in order to enforce it? Can you explain the reasoning of how a registrant can loiter 1100 feet of his victim’s residence, but residing 1900 feet from there is dangerous?
I could present volumes of empirical studies that show the registry and its associated restrictions and obligations have absolutely no impact whatsoever on the commission or recidivism of sex crime, as well as the absence of any research indicating the registry and its associated restrictions and obligations are effective in terms of their stated purpose. But I’m sure doing so will fall on deaf ears, primarily because the purpose of your bill has nothing to do with public safety. It’s pandering, plain and simple.”
It’ll probably get ignored, either due to content or because I’m not an Ohio resident. But I still believe it’s long past the time to start calling out idiotic legislation for what it really is.
Why would anyone want anything to do with anyone that put them in the situation that landed them on the registry to begin with?
Let’s just ban every criminal from their victims including politicians who think and act like they are God. Last time I checked I wasn’t a hoe and the government sure aren’t my pimps. At least they could cut a check for being a club member of Punitive Sex offense laws and registration.
That’s all it is. The latest fad. A new trend people follow and believe whether they know anything about it or not. So ridiculous and embarrassing that this registry has come this far and is still going this strong.
